What do you mean by human-grade dog food?
When we say that our food is human-grade we mean that the ingredients and processes used to make our recipes make it fit for human consumption. In other words, you are feeding your pet something that we would feel comfortable eating too!
How are your recipes formulated? Do they meet AAFCO standards?
At Barkful, we are focused on pet health. All of our recipes were formulated by a team of veterinary nutritionists and assessed by a team of veterinarians. Each recipe is completed and balanced for all life stages (including adult and puppy) according to the nutritional levels established by AAFCO.
What makes your dog food different from every other product on the market?
We love traditions of slow, simple, and nutritious food. Our recipes are made to order and we always use the freshest ingredients we can find. We don’t cut corners because that would put us in line with any other dog food on the market. We understand that your pet’s health is the priority!
We also want to make sure your dog is getting the proper nutrients. Many companies claim that their food is suitable for all dogs in all life stages, but this is simply not the case. Each of our recipes has something different to offer depending on what your dog needs. This is also why we have a separate puppy recipe! We created our products with your pet in mind, and we hope your pet loves them as much as we do.
Where and how are Barkful's fresh recipes made?
Barkful's "version 1.0" started off in our founder's tiny kitchen stove where they made their home-made dog food for their pets, Stella and Willow. After working on our formulas for a few years with our vets and veterinary nutritionists, we now make our fresh recipes in a prepared USDA/FDA inspected kitchen in Atlanta, Georgia. We gently cook our food slowly in order to retain as much nutritional value as possible.
How much do I feed my dog?
At Barkful, we suggest to feed 1⁄2 to 1 cup of Barkful per day for every 10 pounds of your dog’s weight. Feeding amounts will vary based on body condition score and weight. How much food should I buy?
Most of our customers purchase 2 weeks worth of food at a times, so they do not run out or have to buy continuously. Also, it truly depends on how much freezer space you have. Our vacuum seal allows our food to last up to a year in the freezer.
How long does each bag last? And how much would it cost to feed my dog(s)?
Currently, our bags come in either 1, 2, or 5 pounds. Every dog is different and it depends on how much your dog eats in a day. For example, a 5 pound Chichuahua will go through a package of food much slower than a 65 pound Labrador Retriever. Our meals are price dependent on your pup's weight, activity level, and etc.
How do I transition from my dog’s current food to Barkful?
We recommend a 7-day transition period. For 1-2 days, feed your dog a ratio of 75% kibble to 25% Barkful. On days 3-4, feed your dog a ratio of 50% kibble to 50% Barkful. On days 5-6, a ratio of 75% Barkful to 25% kibble should be served. On the 7th day, transition fully to Barkful. Keep in mind that every dog is different. Should your dog have difficulty during the first few days, try cutting back on the amount of Barkful you are mixing and stretch out the transition period to 10 days.
How long does the food last?
At Barkful, we vacuum seal and freeze our food immediately after cooking to best preserve the nutrient integrity without using preservatives or chemicals. To maintain freshness, we recommend storing Barkful in a refrigerated airtight container for up to 5-7 days. Our food will last up to a year in the freezer.
How do I defrost a packet?
To defrost, simply remove from the freezer and store in your fridge overnight for consumption the following day. In a hurry or forgot to defrost? Don't worry, you can run cold water over Barkful vacuumed-sealed package until it softens, and then serve.
Is your dog food gluten-free?
If you are looking for a gluten free option for your pet, look no further! Our Turkey Harvest and Lickin’ Chicken recipe are both gluten free and are a great option for dogs with sensitive stomachs or allergies.
How long will local delivery take?
At checkout, you will be able to select a delivery date and time window if you are eligible for local delivery. We offer free delivery in Atlanta for orders over $75. Orders are guaranteed to be delivered during your selected window.
I don't live in Atlanta - how can we get your nutritional dog food?
At the moment, our service is currently limited within the city of Atlanta. We will be offering shipping soon in the near future. We promise, stay tuned!
